Budo-Ryu International Netherlands
BUDOKAN NETHERLANDS, A DOJO I AM PROUD OF
Richard Salmon 13-11-2008 - As we have been working to develop our Budo-Ryu International we have found many old and new friends. As all should be aware by now Rob, together with his wife Coby, our administrator, have become the major motivators of our BRI. What astounds and humbles me is that Rob was introduced to the Budokan/Budo-Ryu system in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, way back in 1972, and was then away from our system for nearly 30 years after leaving South Africa in 1978, but he never forgot his Budokan routes and was determined to reunite at some time in his future, whenever he could find and establish contact with a Budokan Dojo somewhere in Europe. At last his wish came true in 2008.
While in South Africa he trained under Sensei Hugh Sadler, the head of the Pietermaritzburg dojo and, as a sign of his dedication to the Art and his wish to advance and gain more knowledge, he regularly traveled the many miles to the city of Durban on the coast, to also receive instruction from the late Shihan Ray Ryan, at that time the overall head of Budokan SA.
On his departure from South Africa in 1978, he received the rank of 1st Dan and on his return to the Netherlands, not being able to find any Budokan/Budo-Ryu instructors or dojos with which to continue his training, he switched over to Shotokan and was able to train with some of their most senior instructors such as Kase 8th Dan, Miura 10th Dan, and the famous Kanazawa 10th Dan. From this training he eventually received a 3rd Dan in the Shotokan system.
In 1989 he started his own 'Budokan Netherlands' and, although he was following the ethics and principals of his Budokan training, he was not at that time teaching our Budo-Ryu. In 1997 he met Vince Morris 8th Dan of Kissaki Kai and, after joining up and training with him, he eventually received a 4th Dan in that system which he shared with his students.
Sensei Rob, however, never forgot his Budokan/Budo-Ryu routes and, on being discovered and re-introduced to me and our Budokan last year, he jumped back into the fold with great vigor to become our most ardent supporter. Once the contact was made he, along with Coby, were determined to get back into the Budokan/Budoryu fold and what has become a wonderful friendship was developed, first through dozens of emails and telephone calls, and then sealed through their incredible generosity of flying my ushi-deshi and myself to the Netherlands to reintroduce our Budo-Ryu system to him and his members.
After more than thirty years of karate training, and with the couple of weeks of intense training together plus his other accomplishments in the Art, I was proud to have been able to grade Rob to 5th Dan and allow him the title of Shihan.
